Drivers took to the racetrack (23 photos)

More than 180 cars participated in the 18th annual Terrace Bay Dragfest.

TERRACE BAY, Ont. -- Hundreds crowded the grandstands at the old Terrace Bay Airport, as others dotted the surrounding fields and landing strip.

All eyes were fixed on the former landing pad, now transformed into an arrow straight roadway, stretching towards the horizon.

It's a scene that looks almost peaceful until the deafening roar of the engines shatters that illusion, and a pair of cars disappear, screaming into the distance.

The Terrace Bay Dragfest is an event unlike any other, one that requires a special breed of person to take part in it.

Races began in the morning, but unfortunately, drivers ran into a slight snag.

Immediately after remnants of one vehicle caused a near 30-minute delay, the races were delayed further - this time by mother nature.

A brief, but a powerful downpour, sent crowds scattering, and forced the races off the track.

More than 180 cars are there for the three-day event.

For the second time in its 18 year history, the Dragfest is following a Quick 16 format.

Friday and Saturday drivers took part in qualifying runs to determine the top 16 drivers.

On Sunday the fastest of the fast compete in elimination style, until just one remained.
