THUNDER BAY – The crowds that flocked to Marina Park had to wait an extra day for the city’s first drone show spectacular, but it was worth the wait.
Thursday night’s summer send-off, which included performances by Cassidy Houston, Katerine Nemec and the Lockyer Boys, drew thousands to the waterfront, where they saw images of a turtle, the Sleeping Giant, a hawk, Kakabeka Falls, a walking moose, and a wolf, to name just a few, light up the night sky above the Thunder Bay Harbour.
“It’s always something that’s kind of been on the radar, with the new technology and all that stuff, looking at drones,” said Karen Kadolph, the city’s special events developer.
“We finally got the opportunity to do it and we are very excited to do it this year.”
Thursday’s show was supposed to be the second of two shows, scheduled for back-to-back nights this week, but Mother Nature had her say on Wednesday, rain, hail and lightning forcing organizers to make the call to postpone the show.
Instead, night No. 2 will go Sept. 19.
The Lockyer Boys, the musical headliner on Thursday, said they had no problem opening up for the drone show, a first for Thunder Bay.
It’s pretty cool, said vocalist Charlie Lockyer.
“I remember when we first heard about this night and the plans to do the drone show. I knew it was exactly the kind of thing that Thunder Bay would be excited about, and I think you can see that tonight, with so many people out here,” he said.
“We’re going to have some great music and some pretty cool drones.”
The next big event scheduled for Marina Park is Wake the Giant, with headliners The Black Eyed Peas, who will take the stage on Saturday, Sept. 6.
