Dryden meeting to discuss dealing with deer population

The City of Dryden has joined the list of communities in the Northwest looking to deal with a growing deer population.

The City of Dryden has joined the list of communities in the Northwest looking to deal with a growing deer population.

Dryden City Manager Joe van Koeverden said all options will be on the table at a public meeting scheduled for two weeks from now, including a potential deer cull.

Both Thunder Bay and Kenora have voted to allow bow hunting to reduce the local populations.

Van Koeverden said deer are definitely a visible issue in Dryden, and that his next-door neighbour often has five of them eating from the cedar trees in his yard.

Along with causing potential motor vehicle accidents, the city manager said the animals are also a potential threat to small pets.

Dryden already has a bylaw prohibiting feeding deer.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 18 at the Dryden Regional Training and Cultural Centre.
