The Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board recently opened headquarters is award-winning.

The May Street building won the Institutional-Commercial Wood Design Award for projects valued more than $10 million on Nov. 7 at the 12th Annual Ontario Wood WORKS! Celebration in Toronto.

The building, which opened early this year, demonstrates that wood can be used structurally in large building occupancies.

The building was designed by Thunder Bay’s FORM Architecture Engineering; the firm received the Ontario Wood WORKS! 2012 Wood Champion Award.

Thunder Bay DSSAB chairman Bob Katajamaki said the goal of the new building’s design was to create a warm and inviting environment for both clients and staff while supporting the forest industry and using as much sustainable materials as possible.

“We are pleased to see that the efforts of the TBDSSAB design team and FORM Architecture Engineering are being recognized for the beautiful and environmentally-friendly building that has resulted from their efforts,” he said.

The Ontario Wood WORKS! Awards honour designs and construction that use sustainable wood products, support the forest industry, lower the carbon footprint of a building and reduce the province’s dependence on non-renewable materials and fossil fuels.
