EABAMETOONG FIRST NATION -- Eabametoong First Nation is in shock after its community centre was destroyed by fire on Thursday morning.
The blaze broke out just before sunrise, at around 6:30 a.m.
Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service were called soon after, and several volunteer firefighters attended as well.
But despite their efforts, the building was soon engulfed in flames and burned to the ground.
No injuries are suspecteed.
"There is no reason to believe there was anybody inside the building," said Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Sgt. Jackie George.
The community centre was built less than 10 years ago, at a cost of $1 million.
It was used for numerous community events and gatherings, along with serving as Fort Hope's court facility.
Community members have been posting photos on Facebook, and expressing their sadness and frustration about the fire.
Sources say the blaze is being treated as suspicious.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office and NAPS Northwest Crime Unit are investigating the fire.
