ROCKY BAY FIRST NATION -- An eagle rescued in August from a dump near Rocky Bay First Nation died just a few days after its caretaker thought it might be getting well enough to set free.

Harold Michon, 73, had removed a serrated bottle cap from the bird's throat, kept it in a large, sheltered cage and handfed it a diet mostly comprised of fish.

In an interview with Tbnewswatch.com on Monday, Michon said the eagle seemed well on its way to recovery but took a sudden turn for the worse and died on September 9.

" I went back to handfeeding him, but he just didn't have it. Two days before that, he was so frisky," Michon told Tbnewswatch.com in an interview on Monday.

He said he gave the eagle some herbal stomach medicine that he collected in the bush, and it ate some fish before retrogressing again.

The bird died in Michon's arms.

He said he and the eagle had grown attached to each other's company during the weeks they spent together.

"He'd actually wait for me and I'd sit down in there and he'd try to climb up on me, sitting on me just like a dog."

The Rocky Bay man has tended for sick and injured animals and birds for decades.
