Earl Stafford, former Thunder Bay resident, named to Order of Canada

THUNDER BAY -- A former resident of Thunder Bay is among the newest members of the Order of Canada.

William Earl Stafford's appointment was announced by Governor-General David Johnston the day before Canada Day.

He was born and educated in Thunder Bay and began his musical education in the city.

In 1984 Stafford became music director and principal conductor of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

His appointment was among 99 made by the Governor-General on the eve of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

The Order of Canada was given for the first time in the country's centennial year, 1967.
