EcoSuperior has opened its door to give thanks to community supporters.
The open house was held on Tuesday and offered the public a chance to come and learn more about the organization’s programs. Executive director Ellen Mortfield said their school programs are becoming more popular. Over the past year, EcoSuperior has visited 96 schools and spoken with nearly 4,000 students.
Mortfield said it’s important that the youth understand important issues such as where drinking water comes from and proper waste management.
“The youth are the ones who are going to feel the effects of our actions or lack of action on environmental issues,” she said. “They are the future leaders so the better informed they are the more able they are to make better decisions.”
EcoSuperior set up shop on Red River Road in 2010. Since then more people have stopped by to recycle batteries or find out more information about their programs. Mortfield said they have become a lot more noticeable and more accessible for people to visit.
“We have a pretty strong environmental movement in the city but there’s others who don’t participate or aren’t as active so we need to find new ways to get the information to reach new and different audiences but it is an ongoing need,” she said.
“Beyond recycling we need to be more conscious of our shopping habits and reduce our waste before we recycle.”
The open house runs until 7 p.m.
