An EcoSuperior workshop is teaching local dog owners more about what to do with their dog’s business.
Program coordinators estimate there are more than 15,000 dogs in the city. Jane Oldale said while many dog owners are responsible and clean up after their pets, plenty of animal waste is still being left behind.
Oldale said when it's not disposed of properly, it can be washed into storm sewers and end up in drinking water through Lake Superior.
To combat the program, Oldale is showing pet owners how to make a pet waste composter. She said it's simple to make, all you need is a large plastic garbage can.
Oldale added that it's an odour-free system that allows the compost to mix in with soil and benefit flower gardens.
Her only caution is to make sure the compost is not used in food gardens.
