THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced eight new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Friday.

The number of active cases in the district fell to 80, as 12 cases were considered newly resolved.

Friday’s new cases were divided evenly between the Thunder Bay area and unspecified district communities.

Two of the new cases were connected to a growing outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, one to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, and two to close contact with a previously confirmed case.

The exposure category for another was unknown, while it was listed as “pending” for the final two cases.

Three people remained hospitalized with COVID-19, unchanged from the previous day. Two of those were in the Intensive Care Unit.

The new cases saw the district top 700 total cases since the pandemic arrived here in March. Cumulative cases sat at 705 Friday, with 602 resolved, 80 active, and 23 deaths.

Southbridge Care Homes had not reported any new cases or deaths at its Roseview long-term care home Friday morning. A major outbreak there has claimed the lives of 21 residents.
