The city is preparing to deal with an imminent threat – a destructive pest called the emerald ash borer.

Rena Viehbeck, City of Thunder Bay’s Urban Forestry program coordinator, said the ash borer is moving quickly and is as close as Sault Ste.Marie and Minneapolis.

The insects form galleries under the bark of ash trees, eating at the living material and killing trees. Viehbeck said the pest will cause a real problem in Thunder Bay.

Traps have been placed in forested areas around the city, including locations such as the John Street landfill and Centennial Park.

Viehbeck is asking the public to not disturb these traps, in case the emerald ash borer does make its way to this area.
