THUNDER BAY—Tbaytel is waiting to learn more about why the much-hyped nationwide test of the emergency public alert system on mobile devices failed to go off as planned in Thunder Bay.
The Alert Ready test was scheduled for 1:55 p.m. Monday across Ontario, but it only worked for some Tbaytel customers who happened to be travelling outside the company's home wireless network coverage area.
Spokesperson Laura Foulds says Tbaytel received numerous calls from customers on the home network asking why the alert didn't come to their devices.
She said the failure wasn't an issue specific to Tbaytel.
"This was something that wasn't isolated to Tbaytel or our home network. It was sort of sporadic. Some were successful and some weren't, for a number of different carriers. All the Alert Ready partners are working together to identify the cause, and individual carriers are also looking into the issues," Foulds told Tbnewswatch.
She added "Obviously the good thing is that we do tests to identify any problems."
Foulds said there's no word yet on any plans to repeat the test.
"When we do hear more, we'll be letting people know. We'll be doing lots of advance notice for that."
