THUNDER BAY — Area residents will have their afternoon briefly interrupted by Wednesday's test of the national emergency alert system.
At 12:55 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, an alert will be distributed on compatible mobile devices as well as on TV and radio.
All devices sold by wireless service providers after April 6, 2019 are expected to be compatible with wireless public alerting.
The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission says ongoing testing provides an opportunity to validate and improve the performance of the alert system, to ensure it operates as intended in the event of a life-threatening situation.
Test messages are identified as test alerts, and do not require recipients to take action.
Individuals who have a compatible mobile device that doesn't receive Wednesday's test are advised to contact their service provider.
