GREENSTONE, ON — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is conducting a federal environmental assessment of the proposed Hardrock gold mine project, five kilometres south of Geraldton near Highway 11.

The agency announced this week that it is inviting the public and Indigenous groups to comment on the draft EA report, which includes its own conclusions and recommendations regarding the potential environmental impact of the mine, and the proposed mitigation measures.

The deadline to submit comments is Nov. 1.

The project has already been the subject of several public and Indigenous consultation sessions.

This is the last opportunity for feedback.

The agency's final conditions for the development will be legally-binding if the mine goes ahead.

Hardrock is a project of Greenstone Gold Mines, Inc., a joint venture partnership of Premier Gold and Centerra Gold.

The area was actively mined over several decades in the mid-20th century.

A feasibility study has concluded the potential life span of a new open pit mine would be about 14 years.

The study said the mine would employ about 450 workers.
