THUNDER BAY – An explosion and resulting blaze totally destroyed a Westfort backyard greenhouse.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to a Neebing Avenue home just after 6 p.m. on Easter Sunday where they found the structure engulfed in flames.
Area resident Brian Wyer was out walking his dog in the Westfort Playfield across the street when the fire broke out.
“There was a big blast and then I noticed a big black plume of smoke,” he said. “It was about 400 yards or so and from there you could even see the flames from afar.”
He then called 911 but was told fire crews had already been dispatched.
Fire captain Darren Smallwood said there were no injuries and the blaze was quickly contained.
“We stretched the hand line with a quick and aggressive attack and we put the fire out,” he said.
“The greenhouse is a complete loss but there was no extension outside of the greenhouse.”
Fire officials say the cause of the blaze was an unattended wood stove.
