Eye On The Street catches a criminal

THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay's Eye On The Street video surveillance system is being credited with the apprehension of a person responsible for an incident that had the potential for serious consequences.

Just before 3:30 a.m. on Monday, monitoring personnel called 911 after operators detected a man setting a fire by the doorway of Newfie's Pub on Victoria Avenue.

Firefighters were dispatched to extinguish the fire.

Shortly after, police arrested a 40-year-old suspect in the vicinity.

He faces charges of Mischief Under $5,000 and Breach of Probation.

Police said there was no structural damage from the fire, but some garbage cans and flower pots were damaged in the incident.

Eye On The Street was established in 2005 with 16 cameras in 12 locations in Thunder Bay's downtown areas.

It's in partnership with the Waterfront District Business Improvement Association, the Victoria Avenue BIA and Tbaytel.
