Dozens of local families attempted to conquer the biggest water slide the city has ever seen Saturday.

The 800-foot, three-lane Monster Slide kicked off the Can-Am Police-Fire Games as a charity event with proceeds going to Special Olympics Ontario at Loch Lomond Ski Area.

Thunder Bay Police Service Const. Julie Tilbury said Special Olympics has a unique relationship with law enforcement around the world.

“It’s our charity that we connect with,” Tilbury said at Loch Lomond Ski Area. “We believe we can make a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, so it’s very important to us.

More than 650 participants signed up to ride the slide. Those participants made donations before plunging down the water-filled runway.

Tilbury added that the Torch Run community asked for a $20 dollar donation per person, but people could make a donation in any amount they felt reasonable.

“We thought it would be something unique, and fun to kick off the games with a splash,” Tilbury said.
