THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Hydro will have to wait before it cuts down trees on Broadway Avenue.
Property owners in the area were told that trees in their front yards would have to be removed. City council wants to look into waiving the by-law and instead have the trees trimmed, giving residents several years to plant new ones that would replace the one eventually removed.
Administration is now looking into the matter and the trees won't be touched until a decision is made. But city solicitor Nadia Koltun warned council that if anything happens, the city would be the only one held liable.
If the city chooses to exempt the trees from being removed and have them trimmed instead, anyone injured by a tree, should it fall, could point to the exemption as proof that the city knew of its responsibility.
