February assault charge upgraded to manslaughter

THUNDER BAY – An aggravated assault charge from last month has been upgraded to manslaughter.

Andrei Savu, 35 of, Montreal, who was arrested last month on an aggravated assault charge has now been charged with manslaughter in connection to the death of a Winnipeg man following an incident on Feb. 11.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the primary response branch were dispatched to an address on Valhalla Inn Road at about 2:15 a.m. on the day in question after emergency services had responded to a male requiring medical attention.

The victim was transported by Superior North EMS paramedics to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with serious injuries that were considered life threatening. The victim, identified as Winnipeg musician Cayden Carfrae, later died in hospital.

Police said a male was located at the scene and identified as a suspect. He was arrested without incident and brought to the Balmoral Street station. Police service's Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Unit became involved in the investigation.

Savu appeared in court on Thursday, where the charge was upgraded to manslaughter.
