Government of Canada Investment Supports Tourism and Growth in the Township of Nipigon

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment to strengthen tourism and community economic development in the Township of Nipigon. 

A FedNor investment totalling $39,000 will enable the Corporation of the Township of Nipigon to host the Nipigon River Brook Trout Festival from July 17 -19, 2015. The two-day festival is expected to attract anglers and outdoor enthusiasts to the area, positioning the region for increased tourism and growth.

  • The Nipigon River Brook Trout Festival is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the world record brook trout, caught on the Nipigon River on July 21st, 1915. The festival will showcase the region as a mecca of world-class fishing and outdoor adventure.
  • The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region. 
  • Since 2006, through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, the Government of Canada has invested $351 million in support of more than 1,675 projects. These investments have supported more than 22,700 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
