Officials with Fisheries and Oceans Canada will visit Silver Islet next week to look at its shuttered dock on the Sibley Peninsula.
Scott Atkinson, harbour manager at Silver Islet, says it's an important dock for groups like Life Houses of Lake Superior who use it regularly.
Atkinson adds that it's unsafe, but it is their only access point.
“Well if there’s ever a forest fire, and we all saw what happened in Fort McMurray, if a forest fire starts coming down that road then there’s only one place out … and there’s no way we can move 2,000 people off with a helicopter.”
Despite its designation that the dock is unsafe, the group still uses it and hopes it can eventually be restored.
Many are optimistic that the pending visit by Fisheries and Oceans Canada officials is a step toward the dock’s restoration and handover to the community.
