Karin Sitko wants to make a person’s last days more comfortable for them and their families.
She first got the idea four years ago when she was spending days and nights with her husband Rick at St. Joseph’s Hospice Palliative Care. While she initially just wanted to spruce up one room with new paint and furniture, the idea has now expanded to the entire 32-bed facility.
"After he passed away I wanted to do something for the floor," Sitko said Thursday morning. "Making it a better place for the patients and their families."
While over 68 per cent of the $500,000 goal has been raised so far, members of the public are now being asked to help with the rest.
Renovation plans include new paint, furniture, day beds and a refrigerator for the rooms. That can go a long way in supporting patients and families, Sitko said.
"It would make the journey a little more comfortable. It’ll make it a little easier at one of the most important times in their lives."
St. Joseph’s Care group president Tracy Buckler said the renovations will help the rooms match the second-to-none care people receive at the hospice.
The last renovations were done 14 years ago so it would be nice to modernize the rooms, she added.
And while patients at the facility are there more for end-of-life care rather than treatment, environment can help make for a more peaceful passing.
"That kind of helps with the spirit," Buckler said. "It certainly helps as far as having a peaceful and calming and therapeutic environment."
