Schreiber town council will pass a budget later this month that includes staff cuts, reduced services and a 6.1-percent tax increase.

The aggressive moves come as the town tries to tackle $3 million in property tax arrears. Mayor Don McArthur said $1.4-million of that is uncollectable because it is taxes owed on abandoned commercial properties.

A public meeting was recently held where residents raised concerns about the layoffs and the impact on services.

Council is also set to increase water and sewer rates by eight per cent, which will take effect July 1.

Service impacts will include reduced hours at the municipal offices and some changes to recreation services.

The equivalent of four full-time positions was cut, including the community development officer. The township will also not be hiring summer students this year.

The cuts will amount to nearly $120,000 this year and a$250,000 savings next year.

Council is applying for a $700,000 special assistance grant for the uncollectable tax arrears.

McArthur said the town will be holding extensive consultation with residents in the coming months to ensure the recent cuts and changes were the right thing to do.
