THUNDER BAY -- Just in time for the long weekend a fire ban has been reinstated for the City of Thunder Bay.

In a release issued on Friday morning, city officials say all fire permits have been suspended until further notice. No open burning will be permitted in the city.

The ban’s return came at the request of the Ministry of Natural Resources, who have restrictions in place throughout Northwestern Ontario because of dry conditions in the region. Thunder Bay was the lone holdout.

“In light of present conditions, for the safety of the citizens of Thunder Bay suspending burning permits at this time is a prudent action,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio in a release issued by the city.

“The burning ban is consistent with restrictions presently in place by the MNR, and this action will alleviate any mixed messaging regarding fire bans in the area surrounding the City of Thunder Bay.”

The ban does not cover fireworks within city limits.
