Fire breaks out at grain elevator

A fire at Superior Elevator prompted a significant response, but no injuries

THUNDER BAY – A fire at a south side grain elevator prompted a significant response from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue on Sunday.

District Chief Anthony Smodis said six pumpers and one aerial ladder were dispatched to the fire at Superior Elevator, off City Road just north of Fort William First Nation.

Responders were alerted to the fire around 11:30 a.m. and arrived to find light to moderate smoke, but no flames.

Smodis said a worker at the elevator had activated an emergency stop upon noticing the fire, effectively containing it. The building was then immediately evacuated. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Responders were still on scene around 4 p.m., and a cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
