THUNDER BAY — A massive grass fire near Sarjeant Propane on West Arthur Street was put out by local firefighter late Wednesday afternoon.
Before the blaze was brought under control, flames could be seen right up to the guard rails on Arthur and stretching hundreds of meters along the road — from the top of the hill at Arthur and 25th Side Road roughly as far as Haniak Road.
The fire started at around 3 p.m. and was brought under control by 5 p.m., according to Kevin Anderson, captain of fire prevention and investigation for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
City fire crews were battling the blaze with an assist from Oliver Paipoonge volunteer firefighters.
Firefighters quickly moved on, said Anderson, to fight other fires in the area.
The fire near the propane plant was one of several fires that broke out on the outskirts of the city Wednesday.
"Just trying to contain them so it doesn't get too too out of hand, but they are actively working on them right now," he said.
The public is asked to avoid the area as some streets may also be closed.
