Off-duty firefighter spots blaze, calls in alarm.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Stock 3

THUNDER BAY – An off-duty firefighter helped save a Shuniah Street residence from likely burning to the ground.

The firefighter was passing by the home on Tuesday evening at about 6:30 p.m. when he noticed thick smoke emanating from the basement of the home.

A second alarm was called and the initial attack was made from the exterior basement window, followed by an interior attack into the basement, which led to the fire being quickly brought under control.

The residence suffered heavy fire damage in the basement, and smoke damage on the upper floors. No one was hurt in the incident and the home’s owner and his dog got out safely.

The fire was attributed to batteries being charged in the basement.
