Fire destroys building in city's north end

Firefighters battle blaze in Bay and Algoma area

THUNDER BAY -- A massive fire has struck a downtown building, sending flames deep into the early morning sky.

Firefighters on scene say an old warehouse on Algoma Street between a dental office and car wash was destroyed in the blaze, which occurred just before 7 a.m. on Saturday. It's believed to be the former Superior Motors Warehouse.

The fire was already through the roof, an official with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue told tbnewswatch.com.

"When the crews arrived the building was fully involved," said Platoon Chief Brant Kiessig.

"The fire was already going through the roof, so we went defensive immediately."

Kiessig added that because it was a heavy timber building the fire crew will be there for awhile.

The building was vacant at the time of the incident and no injuries occurred.

Fire officials say the investigation will continue.

As a result of the fire, hydro in the area was temporarily turned off.
