THUNDER BAY -- Fire has gutted a southside home.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials say no one was hurt during a house fire on May Street, by the Mac’s convenience store near Dease Street, Wednesday afternoon. The blaze did lead to the closure of a section of May Street.

Acting platoon chief Kelly Keeling said four pumpers and the aerial ladder arrived on scene after firefighters spotted flames on the roof of the home.

"Right now we have crews working from the inside to try and put the fire out as well as switching back to the aerial ladder," he said.

Tenants were in the home at the time but were evacuated with no injuries. Fire fighters were searching for hot spots in the home still around 2 p.m.

"There's lots of smoke on the second as well as third floor," Keelign said.

Chad Jones was one of four roofers working on the home Wednesday. They had just stopped for a break and headed to the Macs when they saw smoke.

"We were eating lunch and all of a sudden flames just started coming out of the roof," he said.

An investigation will be under way. Keeling said he didn't know how long it would take to put out the fire.
