A fire seriously damaged a Home Avenue residence after firefighters finished a five-hour battle with the blaze Tuesday night.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Service firefighters responded to a call about a fire that began shortly after 10 p.m. at the 1333 Home Avenue house. A neighbour reported hearing a smoke detector sounding, and smoke was visible from the building.

The first firefighters to arrive on scene witnessed heavy smoke coming from the building, and flames were visible from the rear of the home.

Five pumpers were used to fight the fire, and firefighters were eventually able to bring the blaze under control around 3 a.m.

No one was injured, but the building and its contents suffered heavy damage.

Rolf Waffler, fire investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal, said it took five hours to put the fire out because it went into the crawl space under the house.

He estimated the damage to the home to be around $100,000, but the severity of the damage meant the house was likely going to be a write off.

"There was no one in the residence," Waffler said. "We have just begun our investigation in the cause of the fire."
