THUNDER BAY - A fire in a second story apartment was quickly contained by fire crews, but the resulting damage will keep several residents of a north side apartment from returning to their homes.
Just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a structural fire on the 200 block of Park Avenue. Upon arrival, crews discovered heavy smoke and flames in second story apartment unit and a second alarm was called.
“There is fairly heavy damage to that particular apartment,” said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue platoon chief, Kelly Patterson. “It did not get into the walls or the ceiling so right now we have a fire that is under control.”
Five pumper units responded to the call, as well as an aerial ladder, which Patterson said was deployed as a precaution in case the fire breached the roof of the building.
There are no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Because of the damage from smoke spreading throughout the floor, several residents will not be able to stay in the building.
“We do have a number of people who probably won’t be able to reenter their occupancies for the evening,” Patterson said. “The power has been cut off and the gas has been cut off.”
