Fire rips through Geraldton public works garage (4 Photos)

Mayor Renald Beaulieu said the garage will likely have to be rebuilt.

MUNICIPALITY OF GREENSTONE, ON — A weekend fire that severely damaged the public works garage in Geraldton has been traced to electrical wiring.

Greenstone Mayor Renald Beaulieu says investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office have made that determination.

No one was injured in the blaze which broke out early Sunday morning.

When fire crews arrived on the scene, the building was already engulfed in flames.

Beaulieu, who is currently away on vacation, told Tbnewswatch on Wednesday that damage assessments are still underway, but it "looks likely" that the garage will have to be rebuilt.

A front-end loader inside the depot was destroyed.

Beaulieu said officials are looking for a temporary public works facility, and that businesses in Geraldton have offered to help.

Last year, a municipal garage in Longlac was also damaged by fire.

"It's just bad luck," Beaulieu said in referring to two fires happening within a relatively short time span.

He said the Longlac fire was caused by an equipment problem.
