Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue crews have already started to deal with brush fires.

Fire crews were called to a pair of blazes that broke out along the Thunder Bay Expressway near Balsam Street Wednesday.

The first happened just before 2 p.m. and was quickly brought under control.

Then, just an hour later, the same area sparked up for a second time.

The flames nearly reached the highway, but crews once again brought the fire under control.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio said the brush fires are likely due to warmer temperatures and lack of precipitation in the area.

And he said while they have seen grass fires in March before, it's more common later in the season.

Hankkio added that most grass fires are deliberately set, and reminds all residents that it is illegal to burn within city limits unless you have a permit.
