THUNDER BAY -- Summer holidays are the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax and watch a mesmerizing fireworks show.
It’s not uncommon to hear the bang of fireworks exploding in the night’s sky all across the city on long weekends but Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is asking residents to be safe if they’re going to put on a display for the neighbourhood.
Setting off fireworks on public property is illegal. Fireworks can only be set off on private property, with the approval of the property owner.
Fire prevention officer Anthony Stokaluk said there are many safety considerations to take into account before starting a display.
The first step is to be aware of the surroundings and not set off any fireworks around flammable or combustible items. Also, spectators should be kept a fair distance away from where they will be set off.
Fireworks should be grounded and never lit while in hand and Stokaluk advises keeping a bucket of water or hose ready in case of emergency.
The professional show at Prince Arthur’s Landing on Tuesday night is a great alternative for anybody wary of setting them off themselves.
