THUNDER BAY – Quick action by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews prevented a south-side kitchen fire from getting out of control.

Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday night after receiving a report of a structural fire.

Crews encountered smoke and flames on the first floor kitchen area, but managed to contain it before it spread.

The North Syndicate home, located in the 300 block, sustained light damage to the kitchen area and light smoke damage throughout the first and second floor areas.

In a release issued on Saturday night, TBFR say no one was at home when the fire broke out, the homeowner informed by a security app on his phone, leading him to call 911.

Crews remained on scene to ventilated the home.

The cause of the fire is believed to be a faulty kitchen appliance.
