THUNDER BAY — Firefighters rescued two people trapped in their burning home.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials said crews were called to a Markland Street address just after 1 a.m. Friday.

Fire officials said they received a call from an elderly occupant that there was a fire in the main floor of the home, and that she and her husband were trapped on the second floor.

Firefighters forced their way into the home, where they encountered limited visibility and what they described as considerable amounts of personal contents. Crews were able to rescue the couple, while others worked to attack and control the fire.

The two people were taken to hospital. Their condition is not known.

Fire officials said it's important for people to keep their hallways and doorways clear.
