THUNDER BAY -- Ivan Barnett and his wife are on their way to the Maritimes, but figured Hillcrest Park in Thunder Bay was as good a place as any to watch the Canada Day fireworks.

They didn’t leave disappointed.

“This just happened to be where we ended up tonight. We’re in a campground, so we came out. The guy at the campground told us where to come out to watch the fireworks and actually this is a great spot,” Barnett said.

Though the show was a relatively short one, he loved every minute of it.

“It was great. Canada Day fireworks, we always go and watch them somewhere. I thought this was a great show and it’s neat being here overlooking the harbour too,” Barnett said. “It’s a great spot.”

It was 13-year-old Kathryn Sekhon’s first trip to Hillcrest Park to watch the display.

While she’s watched it from other areas of the city before, the perspective from up high was a welcome one, she said.

“The fireworks were awesome. I’ve never been to this part of town for the fireworks before, and I’m really glad we came out because it was really cool,” she said.

It was the old school explosions that made her ooh and ahh the most.

“Just the classic ones, the ones that are gold and stuff, those are nice.”

Kathryn was joined by her two older sisters on Friday night.

Sharran Sekhon was fascinated at the display.

“We love Canada Day and we’ve never been here for it, so it was fun. It reminded me of bigger cities for Canada Day, because we normally just stay in our backyard,” the 15-year-old said.

They were chaperoned by older sister Karin Sekhon.

“I just thought I’d bring them out to the fireworks and it was a lot of fun,” she said.

“It’s awesome. This is the perfect spot. We’ve gone down to Marina Park before, but I think this is pretty good. You can see everything.

And you can see smaller fireworks around as well, so that’s pretty cool.”

Hundreds of people turned out for the show, with thousands more gathering at the waterfront.
