Fireworks sales sky high in anticipation of Canada 150

The owner of Pyro Boys says Canada 150 is the busiest holiday he has ever seen, but is stressing safety per usual.

THUNDER BAY - The excitement to celebrate for Canada’s 150, has resulted in a record number of fireworks being sold, according to Bill Groombridge.

“I wish Canada turned 150 every year,” said the Pyro Boys owner.

Canada Day is one of the six holidays where locals can buy and discharge low-hazard fireworks within the week.

Groombridge says the landmark birthday has made things equally as exciting as they are hectic for the local business.

“This is probably our busiest holiday ever,” said Groombridge. “ I’ve never seen sales like this before.”

The sweep of patriotism in the form of fireworks is good for business, but Groombridge also wants people to be safe over the weekend.

“We make sure that we tell everybody how to set everything up, how to support it, how to pack sand around it.”

Meanwhile, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is encouraging people to avoid the do-it-yourself shows and head to the Marina Park on Saturday.

“Thunder Bay Fire Rescue strongly recommends people attend professional firework displays,” Stokaluk said. “So something that would be put on by the municipality or a responsible organization.”

While neighbourhood displays are inevitable, Stokaluk has a set of tips to ensure everyone’s safety if they desire a more intimate show.

“Read the instructions, never light anything out of your hand, make sure you’re not around anything that’s combustible, have a hose nearby, and always have someone who’s responsible.”

Stokaluk is also reminding the public while it is legal to have a private show, there is other bylaw citizens must adhere to.

“Typically we see nuisance calls... so we just want people to be cognizant that they should respect people in their area.”

For those looking to enjoy the public display at the waterfront, the show will culminate a night’s worth of events at 11 p.m.
