THUNDER BAY -- For the second straight day, the number of new COVID-19 cases reported by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit is in single digits.

The health unit on Wednesday announced five new cases, while saying 10 previously announced cases are now considered to be resolved, leaving the region with 61 active cases, the fewest since April 23. It marked the second straight day the active case count has dropped, after having risen each of the four previous days.

Four of the cases are considered to be from close contact exposure, while the other is deemed related to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, the fifth such case in the past three days.

Three of the cases are in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas and the other two reside in district communities.

Since the pandemic began there have been 3,081 cases, 2,496 of them in 2021. Of those, 2,958 are considered resolved and there have been 62 deaths, but none since April 22.

The region's seven-day, per-100,000 case count dropped to 34.68. It's been under 40, the threshold to return to orange if and when the province returns to its colour-coded framework, since April 14. It's only been over 40 once since April 8.
