A structural fire in AbitibiBowater’s No. 5 paper machine sent five people to hospital on Monday night.

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation while a fifth suffered a blow to the head on a piece of equipment as mill staff knocked the fire down.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue arrived on scene to deal with spot fires that kept popping up in different sections of a ventilation system.

A thermal imaging camera was used to check for any remaining hot spots once the fire was out.

The call came in around 11:15 p.m. on Monday night. Three pumpers, a command unit and 14 firefighters responded to the incident.
