OPP in the Marathon area are asking drivers not to pick up hitchhikers after a flag man was hit by an eastbound vehicle on Monday morning.

Police have not released the condition of the person, who was struck on Highway 17 near Steel River, but did say the lone male driver of the vehicle in question fled the scene on foot. He’s described as being about six-feet tall with a heavyset build, dark-complexioned with dark hair, wearing a dark blue shirt and blue jeans.

If a hitchhiker matching the description is seen, the public is asked to phone Marathon OPP at 807-229-0220.

The investigation continues.
