THUNDER BAY - Snowmelt coupled with heavy precipitation this weekend has resulted in the Lakehead Region Conservation issuing a flood outlook statement.

The statement covers the city of Thunder Bay, as well as the municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, and the townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies, and Dorion.

According to the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority, water levels have risen slightly throughout the watershed. With additional rainfall in the amount of 25 to 35 millimeters forcasted throughout Sunday, watercourses are expected to rise overnight.

A rainfall warning issued by Environment Canada early Sunday morning remains in effect.

Localized ponding may occur in low-lying areas and people are advised to exercise caution around area waterways.

Creek and riverbanks could also be unstable and dangerous due to high water flows and melting ice.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority will continue to monitor conditions.
