Forest fire crews scale down

The Ministry of Natural Resources scaled down its forest firefighting teams across the province this week as the summer winds down.

The Ministry of Natural Resources scaled down its forest firefighting teams across the province this week as the summer winds down.

Summer contracts for firefighting staff ended in the first week of September and senior crewmembers will work until Sept. 20.

In a release, the MNR said nights are cooling and days are becoming shorter over the next two months, which tends to decrease forest fire activity.

The forest fire hazard in Northwestern Ontario is forecast to lower over the long weekend and into next week as rain and thunderstorms dominate the weather forecast.
