THUNDER BAY - A former host of a local CBC Thunder Bay Radio program is facing two charges from a traffic stop in April 2022.
Counsel for 36-year-old Sean Vanderklis appeared in a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Friday to speak to the charges. A section 517 publication ban was ordered on all information arising from the hearing.
Vanderklis is charged with one count of stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act and one count of operating a motor vehicle while impaired over 80.
According to a media release issued by the Ontario Provincial Police, just after midnight on April 16, 2022, an officer with the Thunder Bay OPP detachment observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed down Highway 11/17 between Oliver Road and John Street.
The OPP said the vehicle was travelling at 170 kilometres per hour and there were two passengers inside at the time.
After conducting a traffic stop, the officer determined the driver, identified as Vanderklis, had been drinking and a roadside sobriety test was conducted resulting in a fail.
Vanderklis was taken into custody and charged. At the time, his driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 30 day as a result of the stunt driving charge.
Vanderklis was born in the Niagara region and hired by CBC Thunder Bay in September 2021 as the new host of Superior Morning.
Another court date has been set in July for the matter to be spoken to.
