Fort Frances man killed in U.S. snowmobile crash

BUYCK, Minn. – A 35-year-old Fort Frances man is dead, the result of a snowmobile crash south of the border.

Melvyn Russell MacDonald was identified as the victim in the crash, which occurred on the Cook Area Snowmobile Trail near Buyck, Minn. on Saturday just before 6 p.m.

According to Minneapolis’ NBC affiliate, MacDonald was the second-to-last in a group of snowmobilers, when he rounded a curve, left the trail and struck a tree.

MacDonald died at the scene.

The crash occurred about five kilometres east of St. Louis County Road 422. It remains under investigation and the St. Louis Country Sheriff’s Office said alcohol and speed were believed to be factors, according to the Duluth News-Tribune.
