FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION – The community is expected to learn by the end of the weekend who will form the next chief and council.

Members of Fort William First Nation are heading to the polls on Saturday to cast their ballots in the band’s general election.

The chief race is highlighted incumbent Georjann Morriseau taking on longtime former chief Peter Collins.  The other candidates are Ken Ogima and Mark Boucher. Glen Bannon exited the race but his name is appearing on the ballot because he dropped out after the deadline.

There are a large number of councillor candidates seeking one of the 12 seats at the table.

The polls are open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Fort William First Nation Community Centre.

“We have to go through all the mail-ins and then we start counting at 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.,” returning officer Paula Hyslop said. “We won’t be done until 6 a.m. or 7 a.m.”
