FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION – Despite seeing no new COVID-19 cases since November, Fort William First Nation is keeping precautions including checkpoints in place – at least for a few more days.

The First Nation saw two cases in November amongst residents, and implemented precautions such as limited hours for gas bars and other businesses, checkpoints at the entrance to residential areas, and the closure of its arena and bingo hall.

Chief Peter Collins said he was encouraged by declining numbers of active cases in neighbouring Thunder Bay.

However, the community’s band council will wait until Jan. 8, when northern Ontario’s two-week lockdown expires, to decide on next steps.

“We’re trying to do everything we can to keep it out of our community,” he said.
