FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION – Seven residents of Fort William First Nation have tested positive for COVID-19, First Nation leadership reported Friday.

In a letter to the community, CEO Michael Pelletier advised all FWFN offices would be closed until further notice.

“Staff have been following all COVID-19 protocols,” he wrote. “However, as a precautionary measure all offices will be fully sanitized before staff will return to work.”

The First Nation’s emergency response team is following up on the situation, Pelletier said.

He also underlined the seriousness of the situation.

“Please keep in mind our community has many vulnerable people, including children under two who are not yet able to be vaccinated,” he stated. “In many homes there are multiple families living together that can create conditions for greater community spread of the virus.”

The First Nation did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TBNewswatch.

The Thunder Bay District has seen COVID-19 cases surge in recent days, with the active case count rising to 68 on Friday, the highest since June 5. None of those individuals were hospitalized as of Friday.
