Four-laning project near Kenora still in neutral

Another four-laning project near Kenora continues to be stalled.

The development had $100 million committed to it. The plan to upgrade 10 kilometres of the Trans Canada Highway was announced back in May 2009 by both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and then-Premier Dalton McGuinty.

The first phase of the project was expected to start in 2010, but was subject to receiving the required approvals.

The two levels of government had announced they would split the $100-million price tag.

The project included four-laning 10 kilometres of the highway starting at the Manitoba-Ontario border. There was also a promise to carry out preliminary work for an additional 30 kilometres of four-laning work.

Northern Development Minister Michael Gravelle told Thunder Bay Television the $50 million provincial commitment is still in place.

Gravelle added that there will be no work done this coming construction season. He said the project is still important but needs to be done right.
