THUNDER BAY -- The days of free parking on Waverly Street might be numbered.

Next Monday night the Thunder Bay Parking Authority will head to city council recommending that two-hour parking be introduced on the North side of the street between Banning Street and Algoma. The plan would be reviewed after a year to see how effiective it is.

"People who were working downtown or in that area were parking there for free and some people were saying 'well that's not fair. A block down further there are meters'," Red River Coun. Brian McKinnon said.

With the Lakehead University's Faculty of Law now in the former Port Arthur Collegiate Institute, parking in the area is at a premium. People who use the law school have been parking in side streets.

"The neighours were starting to get annoyed from that perspective," he said.

McKinnon said he's been assured by the authority that those who use the law school will be accommodated somehow, maybe with a seasonal pass that would exempt them from the limit.

A two-hour limit, with residents exempt, is also being proposed for Elgin Street.
